Jaunty Jackalope

Here's what I did to install Jaunty Jackalope on my new computer
  • Install Jaunty Jackalope off the CD

  • Configure the Wireless network to use DeFaria.com all the time. Will probably change this to use a wired connection later.

  • Changed my uid = 500 and gid to 501. Added DeFaria to /etc/group

  • chown -r andrew:DeFaria /home/andrew

  • Enabled root access by doing sudo passwd root

  • Enabled passwordless sudo by adding "andrew ALL=NOPASSWD: ALL" to /etc/sudoers

  • Under System: Administration: Login Window, toggled on Allow local system administrator login and set Enable Timed Login. I had to set Minimal UID to 499 to allow this.

  • Logged out. Upon loging in I got that $HOME/.dmrc is being ignored because it's not owned by me. Fixed. Got logged in as andrew with a UID of 500!

  • Ran Update Manager. Installed all updates

Moorea for the 2008 Holidays

After having a relatively good year, and because my client was shutting down for the holidays thus I would not be able to work, I decided to treat myself to a Christmas vacation to the South Pacific. I used a travel agent, Monique Costable (email) of Great Escapes by Marique. There was a bump or two in the travel planning but Monique was great and handled it all for me. For example, I had initially wanted to go to Bora Bora and thought we had the reservations but at the last minute they were all booked. Monique suggested and set up the Moorea Pearl Resort and Spa instead.

The plan included flying from Phoenix to LAX on Christmas afternoon then out to Tahiti for the night since I would arrive at 1:10 Am. Then a short little puddle hopper from Tahiti to Moorea, the island next door, that took off at noon and landed at 12:10 Pm! A ten minute flight! We barely got over about 500 feet and you're thinking - well if the engine fails I could probably jump. That's probably because the water is so inviting you can jump right in!

Upon arrival at the Moorea Pearl Resort I was easily checked in and shown the spa, bar, pool and other areas before being lead off to my private and premium over the water bungalow. I lesuirely unpacked and gathered in the sites from the balcony.

I think I spent some time at the pool and bar and then the bungalow again. Remember the motif for this vacation was not to have a wild an crazy time, but rather a relaxing time in the South Pacific.
Suddenly I got a call in my room asking if I wished to make a reservation for the gourmet resturant at the hotel. I figured, why not? And made the reservation. Had a steak dinner that was pretty good. Took some pictures of the sunset and nighttime and of course swum in the pool for a while. Basically took it easy that night as was my plan anyway.

After waking up I decided to go back to the hotel restaurant and have breakfast. It was buffet style - very good sausage and bacon and an omlete that was just wonderful. Orange juice and pineapple juice, labeled ananas in French, as well as tropical juice. All wonderful. Some more pool swimming and suntanning before heading back to the "hut". After that I decided to head out down the street outside the hotel to the little grocery store for supplies. It's very expensive to eat at the hotel - breakfast went for around 3200 XPF (Pacific French Francs) @ 80 XPF per US$ and we're talking $40 just for breakfast. I've been told that it's best to go to the grocery store and get bread and sandwich meats to have for lunch so I did.

Back at the hotel and more pool time. This time I got some snorkel equipment, mask and fins, and headed off to the bungalow to do some snorkeling. It was a little tough getting off of the platform and in the water with the fins and all but I managed to do it and proceeded to snorkel around my hut and other people's huts too. The huts were situated just on the edge of the corral reefs such that you cand just about stand up on them off of the ladder from your hut but going out it drops off sharply, 10, 20, 40, 60, 80 feet as you go out. From the hut and the reef going out there's a deep grove and then it levels out again about 100-200 yards out where you can see the sandy white bottom again dotted with clumps of corral rocks. This goes on for about another 100 yards and then drops off again where you see the waves constantly breaking about 300 yards off the shoreline. So there's a constant wave about 300 yards in.

Snorkeling around the huts was wonderful, lots of corral close by, lots of fish, etc. My hut, #418 as I requested, was probably the best hut as it was off towards the end of the pier so it was isolated and secluded and it was at a point in the reef where there was a lot of fish.

At the Moorea Pearl the outer most huts are grouped off to the Eastern side and the Western side. I was the furthest out on the Eastern side. Between Eastern and Western sides was a break with a little platform, a platform that I later found out served as a place to pick up passengers for the Shark/Ray tour and picnic. This was also where the underwater lights were situated that shows at night giving an amazing blue glow to the lagoon where the fish would gather. The Western outer side of the huts did not have as many fish as the Eastern side.

I must say I would often return after breakfast and after some morning swimming and sunning I would retreat to my bungalow for lunch, a drink, hanging out on my porch and watching a little CNN, which as in English and was all about the recent bombings of the Gaza Strip by Israel. Often I would fall asleep taking an afternoon nap which I initially felt guilty about but then though "Hey my plan for coming here was pure relaxation - what's better than a nap! And in such a wonderful room!".
That night I decide to go to Rudy's, which I heard was very good. They sent a driver to pick me up, which was arranged from the front desk. When I arrived I spoke with the owner, who was very friendly. There were not that many people there but then again this is off season in the islands which was perfectly OK with me. The guy from the couple that was leaving at the time told me I must try the lamb so I agreed. It was wonderful! That with a French Bordeaux was just wonderful. The French just have a way with sauces.

Back to the Pearl for, of course, some more swimming and hanging out at the bar. I believe I met Stephen, the bartender by then. He was working on Bora Bora and heading back to France before the Moorea Pearl recruited him for his bartender skils. He spoke good English and we chatted.
On the next day I decided, after breakfast and some dipping in the pool, to try to go on an excursion - a 4x4 through the interior of the island. Mostly the 4x4 left in the morning but this day it left in the afternoon. Unfortunately by afternoon we did not have enough people (4) to do the 4x4 trip. No bother. I was used to having lunch at my bungalow, snorkeling off the hut for a while, a nap and going to the pool again.

After that I went to the bar for some drinks again and realized that the bar had Wifi! So I snapped a picture of what I was seeing and composed an email to my friends back home with a subject line of "Enjoying the view", a copy of the picture and a body saying "The weather is here - wish you were beautiful" then gulped up my island drink and headed back to the pool.

For my second dinner I decided to go to a Pizza place I saw on the road while walking to the grocery store named Le Sud. I had some wine and a Stromboli. It was quite good however they put a raw egg in the stromboli. I later found out that that was how the Italians make Strombolis anyway. It was quite good.

Again, hang out at the pool, bar or the hut. Did I mention that you can see soooo many stars out there because there is not that much light pollution going on. I tried several times to capture what my eyes were seeing with a camera but I'm no photographer. Still it was wonderful sitting out on the deck at night admiring the stars.

Most of the people at the resort were honeymooners or otherwise coupled off. They were usually either French or American with an occasional Brit or other islander. This I expected. I met some couples who were on their 25th wedding anniversary and some just families off on vacation.

Woke up again and decided to continue to head to the breakfast buffet. I couldn't get enough of those omeletts that were made to perfection in my opinion. Even at $40 a breakfast to me it seemed worth it and was a good start for the day. Besides where else would I go for breakfast? Hike down to town? I guess I could but I didn't bother.

Today I wanted to go on the "Feed the sharks/sting rays and private island picnic" excursion. I believe it was like 5500 XPF. But with breakfast being 3200 XPF and the excursion having a picnic included even it seemed like a bargain. I promised myself I would not worry about expense on this trip and that this trip was supposed to be relaxation so I signed up.

The boat picked up up off the pier and we headed across Moorea stopping at various hotels like the Sheraton picking up other passengers. I snapped some photos. My biggest concern was the sunburn I had acquired and I made sure I brought along the 45 block sunscreen I bought at the grocery store. 2500 XPf AKA $31.25 US for 6 oz of suntan lotion, I was sure to bring along.

We got to a place where they anchored the boat via a rope and then jumped into the water with a camera feeding the sharks who know exactly when the boat comes. They told us tha twe should get into the water too but stay on one side of the rope - like sharks are somehow magically stoped by a skinny little rope! In any event many got into the water as did I, and armed with snorkeling gear I grabbed onto the rope like the others with the current pulling me away as I grasped the rope and observed the 3-5 foot sharks swimming within feet of where I was at.

After this we got back on the boat and headed to the sting ray feeding area, which was a place where you could get out of the boat and stand up in the shallow water while sting rays swum by. They told us not to put our hands under the rays as that's where their mouths are. I can recall getting off the boat and noticing that the 3-5 foot sharks followed us here because they knew more food could be had. There was no rope now. My god how would they know not to devour a tourist! I guess I'd just have to grin and bear it.

Next was the stop at the private island for lunch. There were two islands next to each other with a little waterway between them. After docking and unloading passengers the tour operators got busy on getting lunch spread out. I grabbed some snorkel gear and headed out to the waterway to partake of the waters. And what waters they were. About everywhere you could stand up in the white sand bottoms but punctuated all around you were large rocks - corrals actually - that are situated such that you can snorkel for hours and truly feel like you were a visitor in a large aquarium.

Back to the beach for a picnic of chicken, noodles, salad and fruits that could not be beat and some conversation with some Americans before the tour operators got some coconuts down and described how to crack them open as well as held some contests pitting various guys against each other in a race to open the coconut. All entertaining.

Eventually we got back on the boat and headed back to the various hotels. A good trip and well worth the money.

Polynesian night back at the hotel but not before having dinner at Le Mahogany, a Chinese/French/Tahitian restaurant where I had a shrimp salad, followed by grilled swordfish with a 1/2 bottle of Pinot Noir followed by a desert of caramel custard and espresso. Bon Appetit as they say! As I said, Polynesian night was interesting with Polynesian dancers, some night swimming, star gazing and sleep.

The next day followed pretty much a pattern I had been establishing with the breakfast buffet, morning swimming, noon lunch and nap, snorkeling from the huts and a good dinner at night. This night was Le Hunu Iti, another French bistro right on the beach where I had beef tenderloin in a red wine sauce, another 1/2 bottle of Pinot Noir and this time Apple Pie desert. This restaurant was right on the beach and you can tell from the staff feeding the sting rays. There was also a shark that appeared about 20 yards offshore. Again, expensive but good food. The last couple of days followed similar patterns of breakfast, swim, hut, bar, wifi, etc. Prior to coming here the 10-day weather forecast on the net was saying rain/thunderstorms every day. Truth be told there was no rain until the last day, after checking out of the hotel and just waiting around 'til 5:30 Pm for a pick up to go back home. That day it rained with a wonderful thunderstorm to sleep by, threatening skies in the morning with morning to afternoon rain, downpour. I had my bathing suit on and went swimming in the rain followed by a shower and change of clothes in preparation for leaving.

Flying back on that 10 might flight slightly early then getting on the big Air Tahiti Nui flight in Tahiti, flying all night back to LAX.

The real problem came in LAX, arriving at 8:15 Am and trying to make the connecting Southwest flight @ 9:30 Am but them just being packed. I was on standby for the next 3 to 4 Southwest flights only leaving LAX @ around 5 Pm and getting back to Phoenix ~6 Pm.

All in all a wonderful, but expensive vacation. But the expensive part was expected.

Reburning phone (AKA Being on the Bleeding edge)

Curse and Blessing

It is true that knowing about technology in this technological age can be both a blessing and a curse. On the one hand since you know about technology you understand that it's really not that difficult to do it yourself and thus have more control over your environment. Plus you can save a lot of money not getting taken, etc. On the other hand however you have a tendency of wanting the latest and greatest and be on the bleeding edge. This is a story of the later.

As you know I have a PPC-6700 phone which allows me to join the cell phone generation. I, of course, being a tech guy, needed the one with all the bells and whistle. Oddly enough one would think that many of the more mundane but advertised functionality would work out of the box and be fairly reliable. Such is not the case. So it's off to the web to join up the appropriate forum to get more info, patches, tips, tweaks and the like. I chose, for better or worse, PDAPhoneHome. A lot of people go there but there's so much, and so many neophytes with bad information, that it's difficult to get good information.

In any event, and to my surprise, WinCE based phones are not exactly that much different than early versions of Windows, complete with registry with all of it's warts and problems, and tons of similar software, all viaing for your buck, all doing similar things and most doing it badly at best.
The big deal there is called a "ROM" which is another name for the "OS" and, as typical with Microsoft, an OS is not an OS but is an OS with a bunch of things that are not really, or should not be part of the OS. There's adware and bloatware. Add to this the carriers like Sprint, Verison, et. al., all trying to "customize" the "experience" for their "customer" with such great programs like "GetGood" and "The Sprint Store", etc.

In any event, here's what I do in order to reburn my phone which needs to be done as the software seems to develop "habits" over time like not alerting me as to upcoming events, Suddenly not ringing the phone, just being sluggish, hangs or starting to behave differently like taking a call on the BlueTooth headset but not stopping the media player when the call is being answered.

Install ROM

Currently I'm trying a 3.5 based ROM or AKU (not sure what AKU stands for in this context). First one need to download on. I've set up an area under my Software share for PPC stuff, including ROMs, programs I use, ring tones and "Today Screens". I've learned, as I need to reinstall these things over and over, to organize this.

Once you have a ROM you run the installation process. First you need to get your phone in "Bootloader" mode. This means, on my phone, that you hold down the power and voice record buttons at the same time while you perform a soft reset. Now here's the tricky part: The screen appears to be black but if you look really carefully you'll notice it says "Serial". You'll probably have to look at it in the light and move the phone from side to side. Why the secretly displayed with no backlight screen is beyond me.

Now your "run the ROM" and it'll instruct you basically to hit next over and over again until it finishes. There'll be copious warnings about not to interrupt the process. Ominous for sure but what will happen if you do interrupt the process. Answer: Nothing. You'll need to start again. Big deal - it's not like you're that far along at this point anyway!

After the installation it'll tell you to cold boot your phone but it'll probably tell you the wrong way to do it. For example, the "Kirvin AKU 3.5 NoJunk" I'm trying to use right now says to hold down the power button and the reset button at the same time and that'll do a cold boot. The problem is that that doesn't do a cold boot on my phone! I need to hold down both the left and right menu buttons (the ones with "-" on them) and select the reset button (with the stylus).

And cold boot is what you want to do. That'll effectively wipe out the internal card and install all the apps from the ROM. Failure to do that and you may run out of space on the ROM!

After rebooting invariably Sprint gets involved and installs all of it's junk as it customizes your phone. I have a trick of using Total Commander to open the "extended rom" and installing all of the junk a second time but not installing the special package which effectively removes all of the uninstall options for the junk in the Remove Programs area. Then you can just go into Remove Programs and use their uninstall packages!

Reinstalling Apps

Before reinstalling applications check that the phone actually works. One version would make calls but when in a call there was no "Call Status" button and thus you couldn't get to the number pad to say "Hit 1 to continue" or anything! Also check that the Contacts and Calendar programs work. This new 3.5 bare bones ROM seems to work. BTW This ROM has a skin to the phone that I really like. It's a black/greyish background with good green/red highlighting on the Talk and End buttons.
Now it's time to install the apps I use. These include:
  • Pocket Player: I like this media player a lot better than WMP. WMP has this annoying habit of skipping when playing over my bluetooth headset which is not acceptable. Installed on the internal card to minimize problems Additionally the DLL gen_wmhost.dll needs to be copied from my Software area -> \Program Files\Conduits\Pocket Player.

  • SPB Pocket Plus: Adds nice stuff to the Today screen - to me sorta like TrueLaunchBar. Installed on the internal card to minimize problems

  • SPB Backup: One really should backup - I do! You should too. The problem here is that although I backup to the storage card I'd like to automatically sync these backup images over to my backup share. How do you automatically do that?

  • SPB Time: Nice clocks - integrates into the Today screen nicely

  • Total Commander: Nice utility - already on my storage card - I tend to run it from there..

  • FinchSync: Synchronizes Thunderbird Address Books and Sunbird Calendars to your PPC phone!

  • Pocket Quicken: Allows me to enter receipts while on the road

  • Google Maps: The best mapping software

Add Today Screens and Ring Tones

Additionally I copy the following non-applications directly from my Software share to the Windows folder on the PPC:
  • Today Screens -> Windows Folder
  • Ring Tones -> Windows\Rings

Configure Ring Tones/Phone

Go to Start: Settings: Phone and set ring tone. Select More tab and set Automatic Pick up to Headset after 3 rings

The following registry tweaks seem to help:
  • HKLM\Services\ScreenRotate\ShowIcon -> 0
Need to soft reset

Sony Ericson HBH-DS9700 Bluetooth Wireless Stereo Headphones

Bluetooth to the rescue

Since receiving the audio adapter from Seidio I thought I might have all, or at least most, of my problems resolved. And indeed in the beginning things were working out find. But the microphone for this audio adapter sits low with the phone (if your phone is on your hip then the mic is by your hip). Still it seemed to work OK most of the time.
And it was wonderful using my Sony earbuds that fit comfortably and sound good. But the basic problem in all of this is wires! You gotta have a wire from your ears to the phone thus you are shackled in a way. Worst yet, if listening to the phone in the car you usually have the phone on your right hand side and since you do want to obey the law and put on your seat belt these wires cross. Plus sometimes when getting out of the car the wire wraps around the seat belt buckle or otherwise get tangled or your sitting on it or something. Invariably you yank the earbud out of your ear and the little rubber portion pops out and then you're on your hands and knees searching under your car for a black rubber earbud on black pavement!
Also, since you're occasionally yanking the wire it causes additional wear and tear and eventually you're hearing only one channel in your stereo earbuds or the mic no longer works when placing a call.
So rather than purchase another audio adapter and/or the corresponding new set of Sony earbuds I decided to look into some Bluetooth headsets. Now most of them are like headphones, bulky and wear on your ears (usually) over time. Many of them are of the behind the head variety which I detest. I'd like earbuds similar to my Sony's that allow me to do Bluetooth.

Sony (and Ericson) to the Rescue!

Then I found the Sony Ericson HBH-DS9700 Bluetooth Wireless Stereo Headphones.
These seem to be nicely designed and like my current Sony's so I purchased them (~$89). Of course, my PPC-6700 doesn't do wireless Bluetooth audio by default but I found an A2DP "hack" on the PDAPhoneHome forum to enable my phone to work with these Bluetooth earbuds. When the earbuds arrived I had already applied the hack and was able to pair up the earbuds to my phone. You wear the earbuds like necklace and the earbuds themselves plug into your ears. There is a small portion that hangs down your neck which houses the Bluetooth receiver with some buttons for Play/Pause, Next/Prev Track and Volume control. There also a switch to turn on single or multipoint mode. Singlepoint mode means the earbuds only talk to one other device (your phone). Multipoint means that it can talk to up to 10 devices.

Remaining Problems

Hopefully I'll update this entry as I find solutions to these problems:
  • Remote control not working: The various buttons do not work on the Bluetooth receiver. Play/Pause, Next/Previous, Volume, etc. don't do anything. They appear to work with WMP but not TCPMP which I prefer. I believe I need the find the proper AVRCP (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile for Bluethooth). More on that when I figure it out...
  • Skipping at start of track: There's an annoying skipping of music for the first 10-15 seconds of each track. Then it smooths out. Others have reported this problem. The skipping or gaps of silence sounds similar to when you step out of range of the Bluetooth. It may be a buffering issue, I'm not sure...
  • Loss of Bluetooth Pairing: If I hit the phone/talk button on the headphones the phone switches to voice tags. Thereafter my Bluetooth pairing is lost. One solution is to power off and on the Bluetooth receiver - not good.
  • Caller ID/Track name: I don't seem to have Caller ID or the track name being displayed on the Bluetooth receiver.

New Pocket PC Phone/Windows Mobile Media Player Problems

Sprint PPC/6700 Pocket PC Phone

I recently got a HTC PPC-6700 Phone. I have been having a number of problems getting it to work for my liking. One thing I do like is the ability to play MP3 files view Windows Mobile Media Player. I added a 2 gig mini SD card and now I sync stuff to my phone.

Earbuds? Are they really buddies?

Many phones and MP3 players really give you crappy earbud/headsets. Indeed I even hate the ones that Apple gives you for the iPod. Fashionable? Perhaps. But definitely not comfortable and in general they don't sound good. I found a good pair by Sony. Comfortable and sound good. But alas my Creative MP3 player (indeed most MP3 players) use a 3.5 MM stereo plug. This phone uses a 2.5 MM plug. Plus it has not 2 but 3 sections on the plug's sleeve - 2 for stereo and one for the mic.
I had gotten a pair of earbuds that were kinda cool because I could listen to MP3's and when a call comes in simply push one button and the music would stop and I could hold a conversation. Hang up and right back to my tunes. Cool! But this set of earbuds were very unwieldy, thick, heard noise when you rubbed the wires and had this weird metal thing that was supposed to connect to some connector on some phones I guess. My phone doesn't have them. I guess it's for smaller phones and iPods so that you can dangle the MP3 player around your neck. For me it was just a nuisance. Then these broke in that the wire shorted out. What a waste!

Earbud Solution

But I liked the idea of being able to take a call while listening to music. How to hook up my current good set of earbuds with this 2.5 MM connection??? Then I found this adapter at Seido Online. Perfect! Now I can use my preferred earbuds with not only my phone, but with my Belkin Radio Transmitter for my car.

More Windows Mobile Media Player Troubles

But that hardly means my troubles with Windows Media Player are over! One thing that's a problem is that when you're playing MP3 files and you put the phone back in it's holster, it tends to hit the buttons, particularly the joystick, and change or stop the song. You can also accidentally and randomly dial people. Not good. So most devices have some sort of locking mechanism. Often it's a hardware switch but here, in Pocket PC land, it's a software switch or a button you tap on the Today screen. I moved it to the top of the Today screen so that it's easier to get to via the joystick.

Interrupt Handling

OK so you're cruising along digging on some tunes and you need to interact with another human (oh bother!). What do you need to do?
  1. Unbuckle the holster
  2. Remove the phone
  3. Either get out the stylus or use your fat fingers
  4. Tap Unlock
  5. Tap Unlock again (Unlocking is a two step procedure)
  6. Bring up Media Player (I've rebound the IE key to be the Media key as I use that more)
  7. Tap Pause
To get back to the music:
  1. Power on the phone (if it powered off)
  2. Bring up Media Player (if necessary)
  3. Tap Play
  4. Tap Start and select Today screen (Haven't found any other place or shortcut key that will lock device!)
  5. Tap Lock Device
  6. Re-holster the phone
  7. Buckle holster
OK you say, a number of steps but not too hard. But wait! There's more...

Corrupted Playlists

What I would like is an easy and quick way to pause playback, talk to the other person, then resume playback. Is that really asking for too much?!? I found that while the device is locked (and it needs to be locked - see above) the power button is indeed active. And if you hit the power button it will stop playback. Hitting the power button and it resumes playback... but only for a second or two. Then it stops and the playlist get corrupted (see below).
Windows Mobile Media Player has this very annoying habit of forgetting or corrupting the playlist and/or loosing track of where it was in the song. AFAICT if you power off as described above your playlist will be corrupted and your place will be lost. An exception to this is if the device is not locked, you power off and then power back on relatively quickly. Also, if you say pause the playback in WMP and say go into the store. When you return the phone will first turn off the blacklight (see Start: Settings: System: Backlight) and then power down the phone (under Start: Settings: System: Power). I believe if you hit that power down time (mine's configured at 2 minutes) then again, WMP will corrupt the playlist and lose your place.
A corrupted playlist is not fatal. It shows itself by going into WMP then Now Playing. You'll see entries for every song in the playlist but they all say Unknown now. Sometimes you'll see nothing. In these cases WMP has reset itself back to the internal card of the phone (all my songs are on my 2 gig storage card). You can clear the condition by switching to the internal card then back to the storage card then back to your playlist. However now you have to also find the song that was playing and seek to where you left off. Extreme bother!!!

Interrupt Handler Overflow

As a series of steps, when this condition occurs you need to:
  1. Switch to WMP (if necessary - I do this by hitting the IE key which I bound to WMP))
  2. Select Now Playing
  3. Select the "Playlist" button. This is the icon of a sheet of paper with a right pointing "play" triangle and what appears to be a green plus sign. It's on the second to bottom row to the right of the up and down arrows. It's a small button and is only accessible via a tap - tough to do with a fat thumb! And there is no keystroke way to do this AFAICT.
  4. Select the Library drop down just below where the Start menu would be. It has a magnifying glass just to the left of it. This button is also not keystroke available and you must tap it but at least it's a bigger button...
  5. Select Storage Card from the drop down
  6. Select My Playlists
  7. Select playlist in question
  8. Hunt in the playlist for the song you were listening to (if you remember it!)
  9. Select Play
  10. Use the unwieldy WMP slider to attempt to seek to where you were
Additionally the WMP slider, while controllable from the joystick in order to seek or rewind the control is choppy at best. Seeking or rewinding causes the playback to "skip" not unlike a stone skipping across a body of water. What's worse is you can let go of the joystick and it'll still skip for anywhere from 2-10 seconds more! Horrible and unsmooth and trying to use the slider with a thumb or finger is difficult and a stylus only slightly better.

Synching Issues

Being as I have like 15 gig of media and only a 2 gig card obviously I can only sync a subset. The idea is to sync the most recent subset. There are a number of podcasts I subscribe to including a radio show I've been quite fond of called The Tom Leykis Show as well as a bunch of podcasts that I subscribe to through iTunes (Don't get me started on iTunes and podcast troubles! That's a whole 'nother blog entry!). Plus I wanted to make sure I synced some of my music - a random and fresh variety of music - so when I was tired of the talk I could switch to music. But alas WMP on the PC (which is what is used to sync to the PPC) allows autoplaylists and I can configure one to give me a variety of music limited to say 500 Meg, once created that list was static. IOW it doesn't regenerate itself!
So I wrote a Perl script called mkplaylist that scans my some 4500 songs and picks out 100 at random writing a Windows Playlist and I sync that playlist to the PPC. I added some rudimentary filtering capabilities like having it skip the talk related genres then cron it to run once a week.
I also have a playlist called "New Tom" and "New Podcasts". Essentially those are the only playlists I sync to the PPC. "New Tom" and "New Podcasts" are relatively dynamic due to a filter setting saying "Play Count = 0". So if I play any "songs" in "New Tom" or "New Playlists" then they magically drop off the list since Play Count becomes greater than 0. However, I don't play them on WMP on the PC! Additionally, for the podcasts, being relatively transient in nature (meaning after I listen to the podcast I want it to disappear from my system) need to be played in iTunes which will notice the play count > 0 and delete the track while refreshing the podcast feed with new stuff. Otherwise a build up occurs.
So basically I need to get the fact that I played a song on the phone back to both WMP and iTunes so that they know I've listened to the track. I had little hope that it would ever get back to iTunes being that's Apple software and Apple and Microsoft haven't been known to work cooperatively. However I had hope when I looked at the properties of MP3 tracks on the phone and noticed a Play Count. Additionally Play Count increased as expected when the track was played on the phone. Could this valuable information be synced back to WMP on the PC when I did my ActiveSync?!? Well of course not! Why not?!? Ugh!

Podcatching in Jinzora

Unfortunately it doesn't seem to work, from http://www.jinzora.org/forums/viewtopic.php?p=12395:
I can hack the settings.php file I guess. Guys, when you introduce new functionality make sure you also implement it such that the user can always toggle such functionality on and off as well as add/delete and change things!

Here's an example, I played with the Link Track thing. Now I wish to delete the Link Track I added. How do you do that?!?

Also, playing with the Podcast thing. I added a podcast and it plopped a bunch of files under jinzora/data/podcasts. I don't want them there! How are they useful there? IOW how do I play any of the downloaded podcasts once they are downloaded?!?

I want these things under my music store/Podcasts/<podcast name> so in adjusting my settings.php I changed podcast_folder to "<path to music store>/Podcasts". When the Podcast Manager comes up a specify the New Path as <podcast name> and Jinzora proceeds to update the podcast. Now I'm not sure where these files have been downloaded too. I would have hoped it would be <music store>/Podcasts/<podcast name> but no files exist there!

I'd like to delete the 2 podcasts I attempted to play with but there is no delete button. I would like to tell you the settings I used for these podcasts but there is no edit nor view button. I can tell you what I used for the URL and Location. Let's take one as an example -
Title: This Week in Tech
URL: http://leoville.tv/podcasts/twit.xml
New Path: TWiT
podcast_folder: /web/Music/Podcasts
Yet /web/Music/Podcasts/TWiT is empty.

Jinzora: Getting lame to work

Getting Guest Users to use FSMP3 with Resampling to 32-bit

I wanted to have my Jinzora set up to allow streaming to Guest Users but at a reduced rate. Now that I have a new server with some horsepower such resampling does not cause lame to consume the entire machine.

Jinzora settings don't seem to always take hold

Jinzora still has problems with not showing the correct settings all the time. For example, when you selection User Manager: Edit default class it will say Adminstrators everytime even though it was really set to Guest User! Suffice to say it's hard to trust that Jinzora is showing you the correct current setting.
I've also seen that sometimes it doesn't seem as if Jinzora takes a setting. Here's what I was doing: I was going to User Manager: Modify User Class: Edit a class: select Guest Users from the drop down then Go. Here I would change the settings such as toggling on or off Stream and then Update User Class and Close. However that change didn't always seem to register. I found that if I then go into Edit default class and reset the drop down back to Guest Users then the changes seem to take hold.

Double Speed FSMP3 Problem

After getting Guest Users to be streaming, resampled to 32-bit working I noticed that FSMP3 was playing songs at double speed! Queried the Jinzora forum and got the following advice from Wim:
Goto \services\services\resample\resample.php Search for this line:
$lame_cmd = $path_to_lame. ' -S --silent --quiet -m j -b ' . $resample . ' -f -';
Change it in:
$lame_cmd = $path_to_lame. ' -S --silent --quiet --lowpass 12.0 --resample 22.05 -m j -b ' . $resample . ' -f -';
Search for this line:
$command = $path_to_lame. " --mp3input -S --silent --quiet -m j -b ". $resample. ' - < "'. $file. '" -';
Change it in:
$command = $path_to_lame. " --mp3input -S --silent --quiet --lowpass 12.0 --resample 22.05 -m j -b ". $resample. ' - < "'. $file. '" -';
You don't have to restart the webserver. Please let us know if it works, Wim.
I found that I don't have the first line but did have the second line (actually there is one for mp3 and one for wav files - I have no wav files), made the change and all is well now. However, this tweak would need to be reapplied if I reinstall Jinzora.
